Damaged hair is common to women. The salon is our home away from home. With services such as highlights, hair coloring, perms and straighteners, it's as tempting as a candy store. However, this guilty pleasure is responsible for the damaged hair we hate so much. Thanks to my hairdresser, below are 10 do's and don'ts to prevent damaged hair.

Do use ionic products to prevent damaged hair: There have been many advances in hair technology. One of the most influential ones in heat styling is ionic technology. Ionic technology works with heat to restore damaged hair.

Popular products such as the T3 Tourmaline hair dryer and Sedu flat iron use ionic technology. These products are great to prevent and heal damaged hair because they make heat styling good for your hair.

As you blow dry or flat iron, you are actually infusing healing moisture into hair and reversing the effects of dry, damaged hair. Upgrade your heat styling tools to ionic ones to prevent damaged hair.

Don't buy cheap brushes and combs: Cheap styling tools is a leading cause in split ends and damaged hair; brushes and combs with hard bristles easily snag, rip and break hair. They wear away hair's cuticle leaving it weak and damaged.

Buy a brush or comb with quality. Since these are products you use every day it's worth the investment. It will also save you from damaged hair. Use a wide tooth comb to de-tangle hair. These combs are specifically designed to de-tangle hair with ease and without the breakage. For brushes, ones with a cushion base and ball tip bristle are best to prevent damaged hair.

Do Prep your hair before you heatstyle: It's essential to prep your hair before you heat style. Your hair is at its weakest state when it's wet. Never apply direct heat on unprotected wet hair. This will damage and literally fry hair's cuticle. Apply a protective leave-in conditioner to wet hair and wait until your hair is 75% dry before you blowdry or heat style. My hairdresser recommends H2 Ion.

H2Ion is a 1-min heat activated leave in conditioner. It uses heat from your blowdryer or flat iron to revitalize damaged hair. It also uses ionic technology to seal damaged cuticles and infuse moisture to damaged hair. Your hair is left soft and silky.

Don't use products containing alcohol: Products containing alcohol make hair dry, damaged, and frizzy. Use alcohol free gels, mousse and hair sprays. Go even further by substituting gels with pomades and hair waxes. They will hold hair in place and add moisture to hair. Products containing jojoba oil, aloe vera, and silk protein are great to restore moisture to dry damaged hair.

Do deep condition hair once a week: Environmental damage affects hair year round. Hot and cold weather are responsible for dry, brittle, and damaged hair. To prevent hair damage by harsh weather conditions, it's important to use a deep conditioner treatment once a week. You can also use H2 Ion as a deep conditioner treatment since results lasts for two weeks.

Now you have what it takes to prevent damaged hair; but wait there are more hair essential do's and don'ts you can't miss! Read on.

you have damaged it with all those chemicals. you are going to have to let your hair rest. If you have a nice grade of hair why not try cutting it even or into a shorter style and allow it to grow back evenly? It is going to take a while to grow out but be patient and use a deep conditioner.

i did the same thing... buy a shampoo called Mane n' Tail and use it as directed... its used to help repair damage to hair and make hair thicker..and its not exspensive at all. ive used it. try to ease up on the hair straightening for a while... like instead of every day, try once every other day.

it worked for me!

My hair used to be really thick..?

my hair is thick as well %26amp; i highlight it...but my hair dresser suggested not to straighten it so it doesn't thin. instead of using a straightener use a hair dryer with a brush attachment (it looks almost like you straghtened your hair). you should also see your hairdresser on how to make your hair thick again. i know that there are some shampoos and conditioners that help! hope this helps!

My hair used to be really thick..?

I knew a girl who lost a lot of her hair just from putting it in braids with extra hair (She wasn't black). Some hair can handle anything, some can't take much. Just take care of it. I would go natural for a little while and see if it thickens up again.

. 1st stop all the chemical processing . Meaning no highlights, no bleaching no dye jobs, no perms. 2ND go with extensions. 3rd. eat a healthy diet, and take vitamins formulated for hair.

i have the same problem before. But my science proffessor told me that putting many different chemicals on your hair weakens the hair. The solution is do not always use a shampoo, you can use it every other day but remember that a conditioner is not a chemical it only renews the oil loss of your hair. So use a conitioner everyday. That solve my problem and my hair is back to the thick beatiful hair.

Silica supplements can be really good for things like hair growth, skin, and nails. I've used them in the past when I felt that I was having a lot of breakage, and my hair was wearing thin. I also started taking two tablespoons of flaxseed oil daily, and (of course there may not be scientific evidence for this), my hair went back to a lot of it's natural thickness. One thing that I try to do, is avoid coloring it as much as possible. Also I use Phytojojoba Intensive Hair mask once a week. I use it in the shower, leave it in and then put my hair up in a claw. I'll then do something like vacuum the house, make lunch, etcetc and then wash it out as late as I possible can. The last time I went in to see my stylist, he was amazed at the fact that my hair looked so healthy even though it had been months since my last appointment!

Okay this is the best advice I can give you. Stop highlighting it, not forever but just until it recovers. If you truly prefer it straight then keep straightening it. I stopped doing that in high school because I didn't want to keep killing my hair. Now, if you have even slightly curly hair this will work, believe me. I'm going to tell you my secret to beautiful, healthy, corkscrew curls that every girl around you will envy. This will work for all girls with curly hair that can't seem to make it work. First, to help it grow and heal, get a trim then use Garnier Long and Strong Cream Conditioner(the conditioner only), but use only a little where your hair is most damaged and on the ends and do this first, before shampoo. Then use Mane%26amp;Tail Shampoo(this is a very inexpensive shampoo used on horses, but don't worry it's safe for us, too) which will make your hair cleaner and very managable. You can find this in the pet section of your local Walmart for a little over $5.00. After you rinse this out, use Garnier Curl and Shine Shampoo. Yes, both shampoos, believe they work better together then apart. Rinse the shampoo out and condition with Mane%26amp;Tail Conditioner(found with the shampoo) and rinse this out but try to leave a very thin layer in(very, very thin layer or it will look greasy). Now this is the most important part, put your hair in a ponytail and make sure the part across your head is as smooth and flat as you can get it. Then take the ponytail and gentley comb it out. Once the ponytail is detangled swirl it around your finger in the direction that the hair tends to naturally turn. Keep swirling it and try to keep it smooth with the comb. Once you've done this enough it will be second nature and easy to even comb in a swirl. Be careful not to lay on it or squish it under your head while watching TV. No heat, no curling iron or blow dryer. Just let it air dry. Once your ponytail feels almost completely dry(even in the middle). Take your hair down and pull it around your face. You will be amazed at how perfect it looks without any heat styling. If it seems impossible, just try it and keep it up for a bit. Sometimes your hair needs to be "trained" and hair with even a slight curve or wave to it can be trained to curl, no matter how damaged.
