Hair extensions question for anyone that has them please help?

i'm gonna get hair extensions by a proffesional this week. it's going to be a salon. she said she does weft extension. are weft extensions any good. i have heard of all kinds of extensions out there, but i'm not sure. are extensions comftorble and easy to manage. how do you take a shower with them and can you curl, or do anything with your hair so it won't look fake?? i want to know from people that have them. by the way i'm hispanic and my hair is short, i just bought 2 big pieces of weft extensions, that i'm thinking don't match the texture of my hair. .

I personally do the weft extensions also known as track and sew. A lot of my clients prefer these compared to the ones that you glue in. If the braids are nice and tight they can stay in for at least 6 weeks. You wash them as you would normally. It's gonna feel weird at first but you'll get used to the tracks. THey'll feel really heavy when wet. You can curl them WITH LOW HEAT if it is 100% human hair.....if it's not they WILL melt!!! The fake ones contain plastics that would melt. Make sure your stylist blends them in well....tell her to layer them and notch the bottom so it's not straight across (making them obviously fake!!) I also strongly recommend using a leave in conditioner. This will help it get less tangled. And if using any heat, use a heat protectant spray and use low (hair dryer, curling or straightening irons). Hope this was of help to you......I know it's long! Sorry! Good luck with them....hope they turn out!!!

Take the extensions to the pro that you have the appt with BEFOREHAND. Ask her. Then follow her instructions - she'll tell you what to do.

I apologize for the length of this answer but I know you want the most information as possible to help you out. I'm a professional extensionist and i'm going to give you my honest opinion. I understand that this is your hair and your decision. Do what you feel is best and go with what you're most comfortable with.

I would seriously consider doing the 'bonding' type of hair extensions. Bonding is the safest and best way out there for the strands to be put into your real hair. This type is used by celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson, Ashley Tisdale, and Lindsay Lohan just to name a few. Wefts can create so much damage and they are really heavy feeling. I had extensions done for the first time when I was 17 without doing any homework on extensions to find out the information I needed. Big mistake. I chose the wefts, and they looked great for the first 2 weeks despite the first couple of days when I was in extreme pain. My head was throbbing and sleeping was, literally, a nightmare! The stylist did a wonderful job on them and they looked so real, I couldn't get enough of them. The track started to slip after the first 2 weeks, so I kept having to go in and have them retightened, which took up so much of my time and I ended up shelling out $50-80. I'm sure other people can find better deals, or have it done free.. but it's so time consuming and this is the main reason why stylists can charge so much.

The end result left me with not a lot of my baby-fine hair that I started out with. I knew my hair was going to need some TLC when the extensions came out, but I had no idea the damage would be that severe. My mom warned me constantly, but all I cared about was having the long, thick hair of my dreams. I stayed up all night of the day the extensions were taken out, and I was literally pulling chunks of my hair out. It was really scary. Pre-extensions, my hair was about to my rib-cage, but very thin. Post-extensions, I had to chop atleast 6 inches off which left me with hair about to the middle of my neck, maybe shorter I can't remember. I can't stand short hair on me, so I freaked out. When I had the wefts, I took the very best care of them like I was told and Erica did a wonderful job, so I don't know what went wrong. They say wefts/weave can stay in 3-4 months, maybe longer with the proper care, but in my opinion (and from seeing first hand in classes) it's only best to be left in 2-3 weeks. The amount of damage is just devastating and I know you want the best for your natural hair because you can't have extensions forever. Your regular hair needs time to breathe and chill out before the next go 'round. It's just your safest bet to still keep your regular hair in mind when doing any type of extensions.

Hopefully the stylist you found can do the heat bonding. The heat bonding is used by the top hair extension salons all over the States and in Europe. You can find stylists that offer great prices, or you can find stylists that will empty your pockets. In class we learned that the best price to offer is between $200-400 for the process, with or without the extension strands themselves.. it just depends. I'm only an extensionist when someone needs me to do them because I also do modeling and massage therapy, so I don't work at a salon. I let the girls pick out the hair they want, and then I do the applying. Like I said, hair extensions are extremely time consuming and you usually end up using the salons/stylists hair and products without getting your own. It all totals up to some of the outrageous totals you can find. I've had the Great Lengths extensions done a number of times.. but there comes a time when budgets need to be recognized and I wasn't able to spend the $2000-4000 they cost. Great Lengths uses the bonding process, as does SO.Cap. Other salons offer this as well which is why I would recommend asking the stylist if she does the bonding process.

If not, I feel quite sure you can find another stylist/salon around your area that does them. Ask around, call if you have to. I really recommend this for the sake of your natural hair, and for better looking extensions. Wefts tend to be quite thick and coarse, while individual bonded strands have an amazing texture that blends so well and evenly into your natural hair. In class we learned how to apply the glue-in extensions and the weave, but it's all so damaging. Some people have to have these processes.. some hair can withstand this. The end result just isn't pretty. It's a big matted, ratty mess and you're only option is to cut quite a few inches off and start fresh with your baby-fine hair meaning you have to work hard to get it back to looking healthy and maintained.

The way the bonding process is done is by individual strands of hair extensions being bonded to your natural hair by a heat connector/heat wand/extension wand. It's almost the same as a flat iron. It plugs in and heats up to incredible temperatures. The heat connector clamps down over the pre-bonded strands for a few seconds and then you move on to the next strand. It's time consuming, but the results are fantastic and can last up to 6 months. Any longer is possible, but not recommended. The lengths the pre-bonded extensions can be up to 30" long.. which is far past the rear. They come in any color and texture desired.

The strands are pre-bonded with a glue bond. Yes, glue.. but not to worry! The glue is then wrapped with a Keratin protein, which is an amazing protein for the hair itself. The pre-bonded tips can come in various kinds, U-tip (which is shaped like a U or a nail), I-tip (like a stick), and the rare Flat-tip. I recommend the U-tip for anyone because the curve and length is perfect for all hair types and it makes for easy blending. Make sure to always check that the strands are Keratin bonded strands. Without the Keratin, you will have damage. I know it sounds sketchy and damaging, but taking them out is as easy as putting them in. When the strands come out, the most you have to cut off of your natural hair is 1/4 of an inch to a full inch, basically a trim.. which the hair needs once in a while anyways.

If you don't have any luck finding a stylist that does the bonding, email me and I will try to help you out with another way, and any way I can. If you do choose to still stick with the wefts, keep in mind what could possibly happen when they come out. The wefts/track is also easy to see sometimes. I was always being approached in public by girls telling me they could see my track.. which was embarassing. With the pre-bonded extensions, they're never visable. Some will argue, but it all depends on whether you had good work done, or bad work done. Even when my hair is up in a ponytail you still cannot see them.

Extensions are very easy to care for. No need to splurge on the fancy shmancy hair products. You need a great conditioner and plenty of time! They require quite a bit of maintenance to keep them looking amazing and fresh. Your regular hair needs to be atleast 4 inches before having extensions applied. Showering/washing is easy, just try not to scrub the actual extensions, no matter what kind you end up getting. Work from root to tip, making sure to apply a good amount of conditioner on the ends. Weekly hair masks are optional, but they mean longer, fresher looking strands. Do not wash the hair upside down. Air-drying is always nice if you have the time. Less heat damage! When brushing, don't brush over the actual extensions and try to work from the bottom up. Extensions can be straightened, curled, colored, crimped, kinked- up.. you name it. Best of luck! Please don't hesitate to message me for any other help. If you want the links to some of the places I buy my products from (amazing products.. even better prices!).. meaning hair and tools.. let me know and I will gladly send them to you!
