What did my friend mean by "piecing" my hair?

I got it cut short (like typical boy-short, though not style) and she was talking about piecing it, taking bits and putting some wax or putty on it to make it do something.

I tried twice but didn't know what I was doing = ended up looking dumb.

Anyone have a clue? Big bonus if you include pictures.
