My dog's hair is falling out; should I be worried?

I have a golden retriever who sheds a lot. Normally, there'll be gatherings of hair all over our house, but you can tell that the pieces of hair came out seperately, and just happened to gather together. But, the past week or so I've been fiding actual chunks of hair around the house. Should I be worried?

My goldens' undercoats will come out in chunks this time of year as the winter coat develops and also again when they blow their winter coats in spring. As long as the coat does not look patchy, all you need to do is give him regular really good grooming until this phase passes.

My dogs are fed superpremium food (California Natural), one is hypothyroid and one is not but they both do this. They get baths and grooming from a professional once a month and are brushed regularly. We still get chunks occasionally and it usually signifies that we need a good grooming session.

Yes, get her thyroid levels checked. It is not normal for clumps of hair to be falling out. It is a quick and relatively inexpensive blood test. It is always smart to rule out all medical issues, good luck!

how old is your dog? hair falling out is a symptom of hypothyroidism which goldens are prone to having. either way, take him to the vet. it could be that or skin infections or allergies or mange or any number of things.

I would be concerned. Stress? Diet? Any changes in your household lately? Have you been stressed or home less? Is your dog getting enough exercise? Is the dog pulling out the hair or is it falling out?

Best thing, as always, is to check with your vet though.

loosing clumps of hair is a sign of a mange and can be given to people, so get him to a vet asap and can become a problem if not taken care of

Its possible that he/she is shedding to make room for the winter coat. My oldest dog will shed in clumps twice a year once around this time and the next is in the spring around april. If you notice any bald spots on your dog thats when you need to worry. Dogs also can shed lots when they are stressed. If you do notice bald spots I suggest you take him/her to see teh vet.

um...maybe

it could be some sort of mange :(

or her skin is just irritated and she's pulling it out to make it feel better..

golden retrievers are big shedders though..

YES TAKE IT TO THE VET, SHE MIGHT HAVE AN INFECTION OR SOMETHING REALLY BAD WITH HER.

Do you brush the dog regularly? It's not normal for a dog to be shedding that much if you are brushing regulary and feeding good food. Take her to the vet and find out if there is a problem with the thyroid, or something else. Or buy yourself a good vacuum.

"Chunks" of hair is not normal. Especially if you groom the dog alot. Is the dog in the house for the winter? That will throw off the natural shedding. Maybe also try a high quality feed with lamb and rice as the main ingredeint. I had a dobe do that, I got away from the discount store feed and it fixed the problm. Especially wal marts ol roy....Thats trouble!
